The History Of Rockstar Games From GTA 1 To GTA 5

The History Of Rockstar Games From GTA 1 To GTA 5

The most significant video game franchise in the world is Grand Theft Auto. It aided in bridging the gap between rich Hollywood/HBO productions and abstract gameplay. Its release was timed to, and helped fuel, a huge explosion in gaming.

GRAND THEFT AUTO (1997)

Formats: PC, Gameboy Color, and PlayStation 1.

The entire game, originally known as Race 'n' Chase and planned for release on the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn, was redesigned, delayed to the next-generation console, and an evil star was created. The top-down view will show that it was very different from the games we play today, but the violence and awesome radio stations were present from the beginning.

GRAND THEFT AUTO: LONDON 1969 (1999)

Formats: PC and PlayStation 1.

With references to films like James Bond, The Kray Twins, and Quadrophenia, this was more of an expansion pack than a standalone game, placing players in the heart of London at the tail end of the swinging 1960s. Later in 1999, another expansion pack called London 1961 was made available; it was essentially more of the same.

GRAND THEFT AUTO II (1999)

Formats: PC, Sega Dreamcast, Gameboy Color, and PlayStation 1.

GTA II is set in an odd retro-futuristic world that is supposedly in the year 2013 (how appropriate! ), after spending some time in the past. While the world of GTA felt like it was progressing, the game itself felt like it was standing still due to the outdated graphics.

GRAND THEFT AUTO III (2001)

Formats: Xbox, PC, Mac, PlayStation 2.

Out went the outdated graphics and top-down viewing system, and in went the 3D visuals and fully immersive world, realising it was time to shake things up a bit. This was one of the most revolutionary video games ever created at the time, and it serves as the basic building block for all subsequent GTA games. Its playability is still almost incomparable today.

GRAND THEFT AUTO: VICE CITY (2002)

Formats: Xbox, PC, Mac, PlayStation 2.

This game may not have been all that different from GTA III (aside from the shift from 2001 to a 1986 setting), but it certainly received the most unfavourable press upon its debut. The Australian government demanded that a prostitute be removed from one of the game's missions or else the title would be outlawed in that nation. Everything else was business as usual. Fantastic game, but not exactly a quantum leap.

GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS (2004)

Formats: Xbox, PC, Mac, PlayStation 2.

San Andreas revolutionised the GTA universe by turning up the open world features of the game to eleven and beyond, despite some toothless accusations of racism. This game, which is regarded as one of the best ever made, likely served as the majority of current players' introduction to the Grand Theft Auto setting.

GRAND THEFT AUTO: LIBERTY CITY STORIES (2005), VICE CITY STORIES (2006)

Formats: Xbox, PC, Mac, PlayStation 2.

Grand Theft Auto: Advance, a Gameboy Advance-exclusive GTA, was released first. Grand Theft Auto: Advance was followed by these two GTA games, which essentially followed GTA: San Andreas' format but did so less successfully. Despite the fact that neither game could be deemed to be even remotely bad, they both struck me as obvious attempts to cash in on San Andreas' excellent work.

Rating: Liberty City Stories – 8 out of 10, Vice City Stories – 8 out of 10

GRAND THEFT AUTO: THE LOST & THE DAMNED (2009), CHINATOWN WARS (2009), THE BALLAD OF GAY TONY (2009)

Formats: Nintendo DS, PSP, PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

However, with Grand Theft Auto: The Lost & The Damned (2009), Chinatown Wars (2009) and The Ballad of Gay Tony (2009) Rockstar Games created something truly special that took the series to a whole new level.

Available for download across multiple platforms including Nintendo DS, PSP, PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and many more, these add-ons let players explore a new side of Liberty City, fight an old gang war in a new area of the city, and run clubs as they became embroiled in a gangster epic that was way bigger than anything GTA had seen before.

You had some of the best character interactions, missions, cars and a level of customization unseen before in a Grand Theft Auto game. With multiple storylines, weapon types and ways to interact with the city and other characters, there was no shortage of options to pick and choose from in each game.
