Top 10 *BIGGEST* OPEN WORLD Games Ever Made😍

The 10 BIGGEST Open World Video Game Maps

Test Drive Unlimited 2

Driving your preferred vehicle through a landscape is the fastest way to get around. Unfortunately, I had to drive an Alfa Romeo because my Mazda 2 wasn't allowed to go there. Yuck. The reviews for Test Drive Unlimited 2 are mediocre and inconsistent. It's boring, has a lot of bugs, and some very weak core mechanics. But it does have over 600 square miles of open space to travel on—an area roughly the size of the Greater London area. The game gives you a good amount of freedom, even though you are always in a car because it is spread across two islands.

Final Fantasy XV

Open worlds have always been awe-inspiring and entertaining in Final Fantasy. Players have always had the option to explore, from the original NES game where they felt as though they were actually travelling a vast fantasy world to the unforgettable and varied land of Spira in FFX. Final Fantasy XV was the first game in the series to have an open world without loading screens or fixed camera environments, excluding the online games. Over 700 square miles of magically dynamic landscapes were accessible to players via running, driving, and even flying. It's roughly twice the size of Los Angeles, plus you can use magic, to put that in perspective. Can you do that without using illicit drugs in LA? I don't believe so.

The Crew

The group gives users the chance to fulfil their fantasies of driving across the Contiguous United States in an open world, as so many people do. Unfortunately, the scale is not one to one. It is nevertheless FRIGGIN MASSIVE despite that. The open world of The Crew is a recreation of the US that covers 1900 square miles, which is about 500 square miles more than all of Rhode Island. The group is extremely well-liked online, and they frequently travel to cities like Chicago, New York, and Las Vegas while passing through numerous states.

Fuel

With these expansive open worlds, "driving" appears to be a recurring theme. With a five and a half thousand square mile open world map, Fuel significantly outshines its forerunners. That is larger than Connecticut, Jamaica, and the entire nation of the Bahamas combined! Even though Fuel is an online racing game, its post-apocalyptic, post-global warming setting feels carefully constructed, with tornadoes and sandstorms plaguing the map. Fuel is a large map that feels as though the developer paid attention to every detail.

Guild Wars Nightfall

Let's get one thing straight: Guild Wars Nightfall is huge. Consider this for our MMO fans: the total map area of World of Warcraft is about 80 square miles. About 15,000 square miles make up Guild Wars Nightfall. Balthazar, give me courage. It can be intimidating to play a map the size of Switzerland, but Guild Wars makes it easy for players to get started with a fully accessible gaming experience. At this point in the game's development, the servers are still hot, so get to cooking.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

The Elder Scrolls had humble beginnings, and by humble I mean having the largest map in game history. New players to the series who started with Skyrim, or even some who began with the perennially popular Oblivion, forget this. Daggerfall covered a total area of 62,000 Square Miles, which is not far from the size of the entire United Kingdom and is entirely walkable. Both Daggerfall and its follow-up fan remake, Daggerfall Unity, have received positive reviews from critics because they let players lose themselves in what might as well be a second life through an endless questing fantasy experience.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Nothing is simpler than Microsoft Flight Simulator when it comes to comparing the dimensions of open world game maps with actual world locations to provide some tangible perspective. The "Earth" open world map in Microsoft Flight Simulator is about 197 million square miles in size. At 197 million square miles, this is roughly the same size as the planet Earth; in fact, it IS the planet. With realistically simulated flight traffic, Microsoft Flight Sim allows users to fly over 37,000 real-world airports and between them. And in case you're wondering, yes, you can fly right into the home of your best friend. Just stay in the game, you looney.

Minecraft

Being a procedurally generated world, the size of a Minecraft map is entirely dependent on what your system can handle, making it a challenging entry. If you get a powerful computer, your map could theoretically extend 30 million blocks in each direction. You could potentially explore 1.5 billion square miles of space with a good enough system. Yikes. Although the size of the game and the seemingly endless possibilities make it difficult to quantify, they are not. Minecraft has been used to create Westeros, Middle Earth, and the Harry Potter universe. Minecraft has one of the biggest and most customizable open world maps ever made, offering an endless blank canvas.

Elite: Dangerous

The world of Elite: Dangerous is another map that is challenging to actualize. Some absolute geniuses have done the maths to show us just how big the game is, covering over 400 billion star systems and being fully explorable. This game is a monster, clocking in at a whopping 13.8 Million Cubic Light Years. Players control their own ship and can travel through a 1:1 replica of the Milky Way galaxy. Trading, exploration, and combat are the three game systems that are available, and you have the freedom to excel in any or all of them. If you cherish freedom, open worlds, and space, then... Well, confine yourself to a small space and play this game.

No Man’s Sky

Theoretically, No Man's Sky has the biggest open world map in gaming history, and it also represents the biggest comeback in gaming history. No Man's Sky has transformed into the game players wanted from day one after starting out as a hated and regrettable purchase for players who fell for the overpromised game elements. Since the map is procedurally generated and constantly expanding, it is the largest open world game ever. The procedural generation is shared by all players, so it is entirely possible for you to discover a new planet and give it the name "Fart Land 69" for all explorers to find.
